In 2018 the United States imported about $347 billion worth of products from Mexico, including $ 6.6 billion in fruit and $ 6.2 billion in vegetables (US Census, Commerce Department figures).
After several days of negotiations, Washington and Mexico have managed to reach an agreement and the customs duties' threats that were to come as early as Monday will not be implemented. The deal was announced by the US president on Twitter.
Mexico has confirmed measures to control the flow of migrants from Central America. The agreement will be a success for both countries, said Donald Trump on Twitter, saying "the tariffs that the United States had to impose Monday on Mexico are suspended indefinitely."
The details of this agreement have not been unveiled but economic circles are relieved. Without this agreement surcharges would have impacted all Mexican exports to the United States, and US consumers would have seen price increases on many products imported from Mexico, especially fruits and vegetables.
