Adapted to all the regions where grow lemons, the avocados could reach a 50.000 tons production in Turkey.
The national Organization of Planning, or DTC, finances a project of Mustafa Kemal Université, MKU, to spread the culture of avocados in Turkey.
In this project, the department of horticulture of the Faculty of the Agriculture to MKU has for objective to study and to improve the output on avocado.
"We made a study on five types of avocados preferred in the European countries. We realized that the avocado is adapted to our region. We observed that the avocado can develop itself in all the places where grow lemons, and can be kept during two months in 6° Celsius "declared the project manager, Professor Mustafa Kaplankiran.
"We obtain 40 kilos of avocados by tree "which is an output rather satisfactory. The avocado could become a product of export, a source of income for the producers.
Every year, Israel exports 60.000 tons of avocados and Spain 70.000 tons. The future Turkish production, estimated at 50.000 tons, could find its place on the European market.
