Uganda has the regions's highest rate of growth for retail and supermarket chains all have plans for expansion.
Uganda has the highest growth for retail activity in East Africa. Over the last 5 years, Uganda has seen its retail business grow by 20%. A rate significantly higher than that recorded by Tanzania (15%) or by Kenya (15%). The country has seen many retail companies arrive, attracted by an economic environment
that has seen the emergence of a new middle class eager to consume.
The most numerous supermarkets in Uganda are two chains from Kenya: Nakumatt and Uchimi. The two brands operate ten retail outlets and both have expansion plans. At least two outlets for each brand will open before the end of this year.
