Honduras imports bananas from Costa Rica for the first time in its history
VU
As a result of hurricanes Iota and Eta, the price of plantain and bananas in Honduras increased 4 or 5 times compared to last year, according to Tiempo.
Mauricio Guevara, the minister of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) of Honduras, pointed out that the damages of the tropical storms were strongly reflected in the banana and plantain plantations where 200 thousand hectares were flooded, causing the loss of 40% of the plantation. The cultivation of these fruits takes between 9 months to a year.
At the moment a trust is being managed for palm growers and may have a relief in terms of payment.
The functionary said that in order to respond to the national demand, they had to import the product from Costa Rica.
Neither the volume of product that Costa Rica has sold to Honduras nor the date of the sale was revealed.
The situation is worrying since Honduras never had to import bananas before.
