According to the recent announcement by the National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa), Peruvian producers can now export avocado seeds and buds to Guatemala for the purpose of breeding.
Representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food in Guatemala (MAGA) visited the supplier plantations in La Libertad, Peru, and evaluated the phytosanitary quality of the plantations supplying the breeding material of this plant.
The same agreement was established with Ecuador, Colombia and countries of the European Union, which already import avocado seeds and buds from Peru.
Peru also exports vine plants to Colombia, Ecuador and Mexico; blueberry plants to the US, China, Europe, Mexico and others.
In order to be exported to Guatemala, the plants from which the seeds and buds are extracted must be free of Avocado Sunblotch, also known as avocado sun stain.
Senasa will be in charge of the certification of the supplying fields of buds and seeds destined for export.
In 2020, Peruvian avocado seed shipments reached 8.3 tons, while in 2021 to date there are 22.5 tons exported. Among the main destinations are Colombia and Spain.
