The strawberry has taken the No.1 position

The strawberry dethroned the tomato and was the most important product in terms of turnover for VBT (Verbond van Belgische Tuinbouwcoöperaties) the Association of Belgian Horticultural Cooperatives.

 

 

 

According to the annual report of VBT, sales of strawberries last year represented a value of €152.5 million euros. With such level of value, the strawberry has exceeded the leading product, the tomato whose sales generated €148 million euros.

 

 

 

This performance is not due to an exceptional year of strawberries, the turnover was lower than the previous year, but rather to a bad tomato season. The tomato volumes sold in 2018 were equivalent to those of 2017 but the price fell by 8%.
