After two years of recession due to drought, partial data referring to 2009 show a return to growth in production.
After two years of recession due to drought, partial data referring to 2009 show a return to growth in production.
According to recent data released by Syrian Authorities regarding to the agricultural sector, the industry is now taking up the positive trend that registered in the period 2005-2007.
The drought that hit Syria in 2007-2008 has reduced production, - 13.5% in the first year and - 8.7% in the second season.
Unemployment (up to 140,000 farmers) and poverty have risen in rural areas in these years. The industry trend has had negative consequences on the macroeconomic level, hampering the achievement of planned targets in terms of indicators of poverty and unemployment by the Five Year Plan.
