In West Africa, Burkina Faso is experiencing, for the second consecutive year, a lack of water in 20 of the country's 45 provinces. This reduces its tomato production and limits its exports.
According to African media, a shortage of tomatoes is affecting Mali and especially Burkina Faso, which is experiencing, for the second consecutive year, a lack of water in 20 of the country's 45 provinces. In Burkina Faso, the Ministry of Agriculture has estimated that 50,000 hectares of agricultural land have become uncultivable.
Lack of water is reducing tomato production in Burkina Faso and severely limiting exports. Burkina Faso supplies around 90% of the fresh tomatoes consumed in Ghana, where local production is declining.
Yields in Ghana reach only 10 tons/hectare against the target of 20 tons/hectare. The tomato industry in Ghana depends on imported tomatoes and with the shortage of tomatoes in Burkina Faso, some processing factories in Ghana have had to close for lack of raw material.
