For the 2020-21 season Pakistan has just set an all-time record for the volume of kinnows exported. The health crisis has encouraged the increase in demand for kinnows which are now exported to 40 countries.
Abdul Razak Dawood, advisor to the Prime Minister for Trade, told a Pakistani media outlet that the country had set a new record by exporting 460,000 tonnes of kinnow in the 2020-21 export season. This represents an increase of + 30% compared to the previous season (353,000 tonnes).
In terms of value, exports brought in 253 million USD, said Waheed Ahmed, director of PFVA (All Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters, Importers and Merchants Association). This performance can be explained by the demand which has increased considerably with the health crisis.
During the export season which ended in April 2021, Pakistan exported kinnow to 40 countries. Including the United Kingdom which imported batches of kinnow after a 7-year hiatus, and including Iran which lifted its ban. The goal of Pakistani professionals is now to export all over the world.
To achieve this, it is necessary to transform dilapidated orchards with little resistance to various diseases, to develop new varieties with better resistance, improved fruit appearance and higher yield.
By implementing these recommendations, kinnows exports could reach USD 1 billion in a few years, according to PFVA.
