Grey moth infestation threatens agricultural crops in northern South Africa

Authorities warn farmers about the spread and apply strict measures to protect key agricultural regions.
South African authorities detected a problem in commercial areas affecting papaya shoots in two provinces and warned growers about the risks of moving plants to prevent spread.
The Department of Agriculture reported that a pathogen known as gray moth, which can damage thousands of hectares of crops such as pine and citrus, was found in Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces in the north of the country.
To control the situation, the department initiated a survey in the production areas to assess the extent of the pest and determine phytosanitary measures to limit the movement of waste materials in the affected areas.
In addition, farmers and the community were asked to practice effective cultural control methods. The authorities also advised international travelers to avoid illegally importing agricultural products, as they could introduce new pests and diseases that are difficult and costly to manage.
