In Spain, the region of Malaga presents geoclimatic and environmental conditions ideal for the cultivation of many tropical fruits.
ISHM (Instituto de Hortofruticultura Subtropical y Mediterránea) is conducting longan studies (Dimocarpus longan) on an experimental farm. Longan is a crop which adapts very well to the Malaga region and which could be a good complement to increase the diversity of tropical fruit crops in the province.
According to scientists who have spent several years conducting trials, several varieties (chom-poo, biew khiew, khoala) have given good results. The production season runs from November to March, with a much higher yield than that of litchi. In addition, longan does not need chemical treatment to prolong its conservation.
ISHM was responsible for the successful introduction of mango and avocado.
