Annual Great British Pea Week already started
Great British Pea Week it is a week of annual celebration of peas. It fifth event takes place from 6th to 12th July 2020 and aims to raise awareness and understanding of the origin and heritage of peas.
Yes Peas, a consumer awareness campaign of frozen peas, launched Great British Pea Week to recognize the industry-wide effort made by experts across the pea vining sector.
Maritime climate of Britain’s Eastern Seaboard, combined with the soil and planting conditions, is the nice environment for growing quality peas. The harvesting process lasts between June through to August. Pea viners (harvesting machines) work efficiently to harvest, shell and transport the peas from field to frozen as quickly as possible.
Russell Corfield, one of the UK’s pea growers, says “About 700 British pea farmers working on 35,000 hectares of pea crops. Now more than ever there has never been a more pressing time to ensure we have a successful harvest and we will be continuing to work hard to fill our supermarket freezers with Great British peas.”
UK growers, seed producers, harvesting machinery companies and freezers are working tirelessly to keep Great Britain one of the largest producer and consumer of frozen peas in Europe.
“Britain is 90% self-sufficient in pea production, meaning nearly all peas in supermarket freezers going into your trolley or online order are most likely grown by farmers on a British farm, resulting in the nice quality and flavor”, adds Coral Russell, Crop Associations Manager at the British Growers Association, which runs the Yes Peas! campaign.
