Japan is on the verge of once again becoming the number one export market for Philippine bananas. Exports to China fell by 32% while those to Japan increased by 8.8%.
According to data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) banana exports to Japan from January to September reached 1.138 million tonnes. That is + 8.8% compared to the same period last year. During this January-September period, banana exports to China reached 893,628,177 tonnes. That is -32% compared to the volume reached last year during the same period.
In terms of value, banana exports to Japan according to PSA data increased 6.3% to $571.283 million while those shipped to China fell 28.2% to $365.363 million.
China has been the largest export market for Philippine bananas since 2018, when the country overtook Japan, which had held the No. 1 position for 30 years.
Filipino professionals attribute this decline in Chinese demand to the new trade routes that China has opened up, particularly with Cambodia. China prefers a growing diversity of sources, including Latin America, to secure its consumption.
