As a direct consequence of the health crisis, sales of fresh organic food have increased significantly in Austria. In volume and value.
Increasing for years, the market share of organic products has skyrocketed since the health crisis. In Austria, according to AMA data, the volume of fresh organic food purchased (excluding bread and pastries) increased by 14.4% in the 1st half of this year compared to the first 6 months of 2019, and the value increased by 20%.
In June, the share of organic products in domestic food retailing reached 10%. This is the 1st time that a 2-digit progression has been recorded. The organic products most purchased by Austrian consumers are milk, eggs, potatoes, vegetables and fruit.
On average, an Austrian household spent 97 euros on fresh organic products (+ 17%) in the first half of this year. 2/3 of organic food is bought in supermarkets, and 1/3 is bought at discount prices. Almost all Austrians have consumed organic food at least once in the past 6 months.
