Spanish imports of fruit and veg are on an upward trend

The Spanish import of fruits and vegetables in the first half of the year has increased by 6.8% in volume and 9.9% in value, compared to the previous year. The total volume of imports is 1.9 million tons worth 1,247 million euros, according to official data from the Directorate General of Customs.
Fruit imports reached 1,043,153 tons (+9.9%) and 1,309 million euros (+10.3%). The fruits with the highest demand were bananas, 175,196 tons (+7.8%), apples, 108,430 tons (+14%) and watermelons, 100,966 tons (+1.6%).
Vegetable imports accumulated 1.9 million tons, 6.8% higher than in the same period of 2020, for a value of 1,043 million euros (+9.9%).
The most imported vegetables are potatoes, with 523,562 tons (+6.7%), onions, 78,384 tons (-19.2%), tomatoes, 72,253 tons (-5.1%), beans, 55,082 tons (+7.5%) and peppers, 45,216 tons (+11.3%).
The monthly behavior of imports stands out for its stability throughout all months, which means purchases abroad are not concentrated in a specific period of the year. Volumes are at around 200,000 tons each month.
In this period, March, April and May were the months with the highest imports with some 399,422 tons (+18.4 %) in March, 392,718 tons (+16.6%) in April and 324,515 tons (+7.7%) in May. June was the month with the lowest export with 244,598 tons.
