Brazil seeks to export more fruit to China, despite restrictions
Forty Brazilian producers are visiting Shanghai with the aim of expanding access beyond melons and grapes, the only fruits currently allowed.
Brazil, the third largest fruit producer in the world, seeks to expand its presence in the international market with a trade mission to China from May 12 to 19. Although the country exported fruits for US$1.3 billion in 2024 (double the amount of a decade ago), it still ranks 23rd among global exporters, according to local media.
Due to Chinese government restrictions, only melons and grapes are allowed to be exported, which represents a challenge for Brazilian entrepreneurs. Forty producers are traveling to Shanghai this week to learn about the local market, establish commercial ties and advance in negotiations to open new opportunities.
Among the objectives of the visit are to understand Chinese consumer preferences and improve export logistics, especially for sensitive products such as grapes and mangoes, which require refrigerated transport with precise temperature.
