Panamanian banana exports grew by 7.1% in volume

Until week 37 of the current year, Panamanian banana export volume grew by 7.1%, compared to the same period in 2020, with a total of 242,840 tons, a figure that continues to rise today.
According to José De La Lastra, director of the sector in the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA), the good administration, technological development and expansion of cultivated area contributed to the increase in production in the last 3 years. Today, the area planted with bananas is 8,000 hectares. The cultivation is focused in the western part of the country, along the border with Costa Rica.
The positive production dynamics forecast that exports in the second half of 2021 would total another 138,000 tons, to end the period with 5% higher than 2020, with revenues of $200 million.
Today, the main destinations for these supplies are the Netherlands, the US, the UK, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Italy and China, according to MIDA.
