Ambitious objectives for fluvial transport (-40% of CO2 emissions) and maritime transport (-70%).
For the Netherlands, which has the first European seaport and the first fluvial fleet in Europe, the energy transition in the merchant marine sector is a growth vector and an opportunity to take the lead in green innovation.

Minister Cora van Nieuwenhuizen, in charge of Infrastructure and Water Management, presented the "Green Deal" agreement for cleaner maritime and river projects. The government will release 15 million for the river sector and 5 million for the maritime sector.

The river sector will have to reduce its CO2 emissions by 40% by 2030 for carbon neutrality by 2050. For the maritime sector, the target is a 70% reduction in CO2 emissions in 2050, a threshold beyond that set at the global level of 50%.
