The harvest and export of watermelons grown under glass in the Antalya region have been authorized by the Commission responsible for establishing the maturity of these fruits. From May 5th onwards, exporting will begin. This is the same date as last year.
Turkey is a major producer of watermelons, mainly imported by Germany, Italy and Russia. Last season, from January to August, 46,000 tons of watermelons were exported, with a 16% drop compared to 2015. It is the 9th most exported fruit of Turkey.
Watermelon is generally grown in the open field in southeastern Turkey for most of the production in the Adana and Diyarbakır regions and greenhouse crops account for only 2 percent of total production.
Domestic consumption is very important and the Turks do not hesitate to import watermelons from Iran, which are earlier than those of Turkey.
