In Rwanda the spectacular boom in avocado production will continue. Officials in the agricultural sector predict a doubling of the value of exports this year.
According to NAFB (National Agricultural Export Development Board) figures, in Rwanda the production of avocados increased from around 1,000 tons in 2021 to 2,600 tons in 2022. The value of avocado exports increased from 1.6 million USD in 2021 to USD 4.5 million in 2022.
NAFB forecasts that in the 2022/23 financial year, the value of avocado exports will double to USD 8-9 million.
According to the Head of Emerging Products Division at NAEB, Jean Marie Vianney Munyaneza, if a 2-fold increase occurs for the next 3 years, avocado export revenues could reach USD 36 million in 2024/25.
Avocado can be one of the main export products. In 2021/22 exports of the vegetable-fruit-flower category reached USD 42.8 million and total agricultural exports reached USD 640.9 million. The government's goal is to reach USD 1 billion in revenue per year from its agricultural exports by 2024.
