The date harvested in Mexico's agricultural valleys of Mexicali, Baja California, San Luis Río Colorado and Sonora, is well accepted by the markets of the United States, Australia, France and Holland.
Marco Antonio Chavira, a date producer from the Mexicali Valley, believes that this crop offers long-term benefits and requires investment. "One hectare of adult date palm generates more income than 10 hectares of wheat," says Chavira.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader), in 2021, the production of the Mexicali Valley reached some 8,179 tons of dates, most of which are destined for the US markets.
Chavira assured that marketing the date is easy, and there are enough buyers, however the intermediaries are always the most benefited. What the sector lacks is to form cooperatives, achieve a better price and obtain the support of the authorities to acquire better equipment.
The main requirements to obtain a good crop are the quality of the land, the availability of the water, the behavior of the climate and academic research that would further enrich the harvest.
Today, the price per kilo of dates is $3.30 in a transaction between producers and packing companies.
The good season for dates is from the end of August to October, although it depends on the weather.
