Mali: agricultural power of tomorrow? Irrigated areas only account for 98,000 ha of the 5 million potentially arable.
Through investment, the production is increasing.
The agricultural sector accounts for 36% of gross domestic product (GDP). To develop the agricultural sector, the state has attracted investors, both domestic and foreign.
Water development programs, promotion of promising sectors, establishment of agro-industries. Today, nearly 98,000 ha are irrigated, but 5 million hectares are potentially arable.
Mango exports increased from 1,000 tons in 2005 to about 12,000 t in 2009 and have a potential of 200,000 tons.
For tomato production (64,000 t), potato (95,000 t), onion (260. 000 t) and shallot (100,000 t), the challenge will be processing.
