Mercabarna aims energy efficiency

Mercabarna, the wholesale market of Barcelona will reduce by 13.3 million kilograms of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere and reduce the energy bills of companies (up to 30%).

Mercabarna signed an agreement of a new alternative energy system with the City of Barcelona and Econenergias company. The investment is huge (23 million euros 1/4 of which will be supported by Mercabarna) but will allow to move towards true energy efficiency.

This new network will directly bring to Mercabarna cold recovered during the gasification of natural gas. Arriving in liquid form, natural gas is gasified in the plant of Enagas at the port of Barcelona. This process generates a surplus of cold that will be used by Mercabarna, the largest concentration of industrial refrigeration of Spain (800,000 m3).

A simulation showed a decrease of 13.3 million pounds of CO2 emissions and a potential 30% savings on energy bills of companies. This network will be operational in the first half of 2017.
