New Peruvian blueberry varieties thrive without cold weather

These tropical‑adapted genetics are the result of more than 15 years of breeding work in Peru.
Two new blueberry varieties — Abril Blue+™ and Alessia Blue+™ — are opening doors for growers in warm and tropical regions. Developed in Peru, these no‑chill varieties don’t require cold weather to bloom and are ideal for coastal or climate‑affected zones.
Both varieties offer high yields, firm pulp, and consistent sweetness. Over 70% of berries exceed 18 mm in size, qualifying as “Jumbo,” while shelf life can surpass 70 days at low temperatures — a major advantage for postharvest handling and exports.
Alessia Blue+™ produces more than 95% of berries above 16 mm, with steady ripening and long harvest periods. Abril Blue+™ shares the same traits, delivering premium quality and excellent postharvest results.
These tropical‑adapted genetics are the result of more than 15 years of breeding work in Peru and are now being expanded globally across South America, Europe, and Africa to support food security and climate resilience.
Designed for regions with little or no chill, these blueberries reduce climate‑related risks and meet the global demand for large, sweet, and long‑lasting fruit.
