To further strengthen the country's food security, the Ministry of Municipality and the Environment pays particular attention to the agricultural sector with the establishment of its "Qatari vegetables program".
Thus, the ministry completed the preparation to distribute 73 greenhouses to local farms, as a state grant, in order to expand and improve the production of these farms. The objective is to increase local products and preserve water resources. The ministry also encourages organic farming in the country. So far three farms have been completely transformed into organic farms and five other farms will be transformed into organic farms in the short term.
In the area of improving the marketing of local products, farmers were able to exhibit and sell their products directly at a few locations (Al Mazroua, Al Khor & Dakhira, Al Wakra). During the 7 months of the last season 78 local farms have sold about 4785 tons of fresh quatari vegetables. Additional new venues will be equipped for the next season.
