Fruit & vegetables registered remarkable price decline
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in the food segment in Germany has fallen in September 2009 by 3% compared with September 2008.
As reported by the German National Institute of Statistics (Destatis), this the second time this year that negative figures have been recorded (the other was in July 2009 with a drop by 0.5%). Compared with August 2009 the index declined by 0.4%.
Last September 2009 the inflation rate was affected by the reduction in energy and food prices.
Fruit and vegetables registered remarkable price decline. The cost of vegetables was in general 8.9% less than the same period last year. The most affected products were potatoes (- 23.4%), cucumbers (- 22.9%) and peppers (- 21.7%).
In fruit, the average price decline was by 6.3%. Among these, apples dropped by 11.3% and kiwifruits by 8.3%.
