In India the onion harvest is expected to be more than 40% higher than last year. The government has decided to lift the ban on exporting onions.
For several months, India had banned onion exports following the shortage which had occurred after a very poor harvest. Now the government has decided to lift this export ban due to the expected bumper crop.
The arrival of the rabi onion harvest (winter) has started in small quantities and is expected to increase from mid-March. In March, onion arrivals should reach 40.68 lakh tonnes (28.44 lakh tonnes a year ago), and in April more than 86 lakh tonnes (61 lakh tonnes last year).
