In 2021, the catastrophic episodes of frost had resulted in a historically low harvest volume. In 2022, according to initial estimates, French cherry production will return to its 2017-2020 average level.
According to the latest Agreste Conjoncture report from the Ministry of Agriculture, cherry production is estimated at 35,000 tonnes. That is a volume close (-2%) to the average production for 2017-2020 and much higher (+126%) than in 2021.
The report indicates according to the major production areas: Occitanie region 7,800 tonnes (+60% compared to 2021), Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region 11,600 tonnes (+199% compared to 2021), Provence-Alpes-Côte region d'Azur 9,500 tons (+135% compared to 2021).
These forecasts were finalized on May 1, on the basis of data transmitted at the end of April. These early production estimates may change depending on climatic or health events that occur between now and harvest.
