Production of apples and pears in the southern hemisphere is expected to decline

Based on data from the 6 main producing countries, 2022 production in the southern hemisphere is expected to reach 4.8 million tonnes for apples and 1.3 million tonnes for pears (Photo: froutonea.com).
Based on data from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, New Zealand and South Africa, WAPA (World Apple and Pear Association) predicts a decrease in apple production and pears in the southern hemisphere.
As part of its annual general meeting, WAPA unveiled its estimate of the 2022 harvest of apples and pears in the southern hemisphere. Based on data from the 6 main producing countries (ASOEX-Chile, CAFI-Argentina, ABPM-Brazil, Hortgro-South Africa, APAL-Australia, NZ Apples and Pears-New Zealand), in 2022 apple production should decrease by 7% and pear production is expected to decrease by 6% compared to the previous year.
Apples
The Southern Hemisphere apple harvest for 2022 is expected to reach 4,864,000 tonnes, down 7% from 5,217,000 tonnes in 2021.
Due to the expected decline of 30% in Brazil and 11% in Argentina as well as 3% in Australia and 2% in Chile. On the contrary, New Zealand should register an increase of 15% as well as South Africa of 4%.
In 2022, Chile should remain the leader in apple production in the southern hemisphere with 1,455,000 tonnes. South Africa (1,163,000 tonnes), Brazil (900,000 tonnes), New Zealand (590,000 tonnes), Argentina (445,000 tonnes) and Australia (311,000 tonnes) follow.
In 2022 exports are expected to remain stable at 1,744,762 tonnes, with higher volumes exported by New Zealand (+17%) and South Africa (+6%) offsetting the decline in Brazilian apple exports.
Pears
The Southern Hemisphere pear harvest is expected to reach 1,229,000 tons, or -6% compared to the 2021 volume.
Due to the expected decline of 13% in Argentina, 11% in Chile, and 6% in Australia. On the contrary, New Zealand should register an increase of +31% and South Africa of +5%.
In 2022 Argentina should remain the leader in pear production in the southern hemisphere with 522,000 tonnes. South Africa (492,000 tonnes), Chile (122,000 tonnes), Australia (81,000 tonnes) and New Zealand (11,000 tonnes) follow.
In 2022 exports are expected to decrease by 6% compared to 2021 to reach a total of 641,207 tonnes, due to a 14% drop in Argentine exports.
