The tomato and cucumber sector in the Canary Islands has presented the regional government with a conversion plan to ensure its sustainability, including the exploration of alternative crops such as papaya and pitaya, according to the regional government.

This proposal is the result of a working group in which agricultural organisations such as CCOO, SITCA and UGT took part, together with the employers' associations Asaja, Asaga Canarias, Coagrisan, Fedex, Asocan and Grupo Bonny. The meeting, chaired by the Canary Islands Government's Deputy Minister for the Primary Sector, Eduardo García, and the Director General of Labour, José Ramón Rodríguez, also considered the possibility of applying for early retirement for packaging workers, sharecroppers and labourers.

At the meeting, held last week, it was announced that on 10 April the negotiating table of the Regional Agreement for the Countryside, which expired in 2018, will be held.
