In the context of food scares in place by the European Union for food exports from third countries, a specific control has been put in place for lemons of Turkish origin by EU regulation No. 2016/443.
The Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) indicated that chlorpyrifos residues were found in the batch of lemons from Turkey.
In European regulations, the residue limit allowed for lemons is 0.20 mg / kg. The limit detected for that particular lot was 0.497 mg / kg.
To counter this problem, the Turkish Citrus Council as well as various organizations organized a SWOT meeting as part of its activities to determine the impact of pesticides on the citrus industry and products used after harvest. "
