For Taiwan, China normally accounts for 90% of its total pineapple exports. But China has decided on an embargo on these pineapple shipments. The unprecedented response of the Taiwanese was to compensate for this shortfall for the sector by their mass purchases of national pineapples.
In 2020, Taiwan exported 41,661 tonnes of pineapple to China, valued at approximately USD 53.9 million. China accounts for 90% of Taiwanese pineapple exports. But on February 26, China announced to ban all imports of Taiwanese pineapples because of parasites discovered on 13 batches of fruit. Taiwan had already exported 6,200 batches of pineapples to China, 99.79% of which had passed Chinese customs inspection tests.
MOFA (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) launched the "FreedomPineapple" campaign on Twitter, calling on the public to buy domestic pineapples. Taiwanese companies and citizens bought a whole year's volume in just 4 days.
COA (Council of Agriculture) announced that Taiwanese farmers have received pre-orders for 41,687 tons of pineapples from companies, e-commerce platforms and consumers, already exceeding the annual quantity of exports to China. Exporters and foreign companies ordered 5,000 tonnes.
To escape dependence on the Chinese market, Taiwan wants to increase its efforts to strengthen existing markets and develop new markets abroad.
The pineapple season in Taiwan has just started and will run until June.
