New scientific study confirms the benefits of a high consumption of Fruits & Vegetables.
The health prevention message that encourages 5 servings of Fruits & Vegetables per day is now well distributed, but in order to hopefully live healthy a long time, the ideal would be rather 10 portions of Fruits & Vegetables per day.
Researchers at Imperial College London advocate 800 grams of Fruits & Vegetables, 10 daily servings. Their study focused on 2 million people, comparing the increase in life expectancy and the proportion of Fruits & Vegetables consumed. The risk of illness is reduced by eating 5 servings per day but the biggest benefits come with 10 servings of 80g per day.
The risk of cardiovascular disease is reduced by 28% (13% only with 200g per day), the cancer risk is lowered by 13% (only 4% with 200g), the risk of stroke is reduced by 33% And the risk of dying prematurely by 31%.
Scientists point out that the message of 5 servings of Fruits & Vegetables per day is quite valid but that 10 portions would be even better. The complexity of the nutrients contained in Fruits & Vegetables is crucial and can not be replaced by antioxidant or vitamin supplements.
