Peruvian pineapple export boom halts last year
VU
In the past 5 years, Peruvian pineapple exports have been on an upward trajectory, with a notable boost in 2021. However, this trend was interrupted in 2022, when the supplies showed a decline compared to the previous year.
According to César Freund, the Deputy Director of Commercial Intelligence and Prospective at Promperú, in 2022, pineapple exports experienced a 7.6% drop due to specific factors.
The major markets like the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom started sourcing from Costa Rica, one of the world's largest pineapple producers, which experienced a peak in production. Additionally, the significant supply of pineapples from other nations like Honduras and Mexico began to compete for the same buyers.
According to Freund, Peruvian pineapple sales overseas showed the following figures in recent years: $277,018 in 2017, $585,460 in 2018, $819,857 in 2019, $1,934,153 in 2020, $3,925,408 in 2021, and $3,627,235 in 2022.
Last year, these shipments reached a total of 9 markets, with the United States leading with $3,388,260, followed by Germany ($108,088), and the United Kingdom ($47,117).
