No need for additional land for the production of Piñatex, this "leather" which is a by-product of the pineapple crop.
Made from the fibers of the plant and therefore a by-product of the pineapple culture, this plant leather is an ecological alternative to real leather and petroleum products.
ANANAS ANAM, a company based in the Philippines, markets this innovative material: PINATEX, made from the fibers of the plant. For 1m2 of this new "textile" it takes 480 sheets, or about 16 pineapples. Forecasts point to approximately 1000 m2 of PINATEX sold each year.
The idea comes from Ms. Carmen Hijosa, a Spanish designer who has worked extensively in the traditional leather sector. She has initiated collaborations with some brands (Camper, Puma) and presented various products.
