New Zealand avocado harvest is good but professionals say this season will be one of the toughest the industry has seen in the past decade.
Recently interviewed by RNZ, Hugh Moore, a producer based in the Bay of Plenty, described the situation as a "perfect storm". The avocado harvest is good but domestic sales have declined due to lower demand from the HoReCa sector, international sales will decline due to lack of Australian demand this year after excess production.
In addition, New Zealand exporters are also grappling with transportation disruptions and rising shipping costs, which have made accessing Asian markets more difficult than usual.
Without its traditional outlet to Australia, national production flooded the domestic market and caused prices to fall. But this drop in prices, according to Mrs Jen Scoular CEO of New Zealand Avocao, could attract the 30% of New Zealanders who do not buy avocados and thus increase the demand for avocados on the domestic market this season.
