In Spain, the reevaluation of citrus exports has led to a positive trade balance, reaching 2,509 million euros in the 2023-2024 campaign. This achievement is significant considering the reduction in production due to adverse weather conditions, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA).
Spain continues to be the world's main exporter of fresh citrus fruits, representing 25% of global exports.
Between September 2023 and April 2024, exports were 2.34 million tons, 3.1% less than the previous campaign. However, in value terms, exports reached 2,662 million euros, an increase of 1.6%.
Imports also increased slightly in volume and significantly in value. Production has been affected by drought and extreme weather conditions, resulting in a forecast harvest of 5.73 million tonnes, the lowest in 11 years.
Despite this decrease, Spain continues to be the main citrus producer in the European Union and the sixth in the world. Orange production has decreased significantly, while lemons and grapefruits could achieve record harvests.
Andalusia has been the region most affected by the drought, with a 20% reduction in global production, especially in oranges. The Valencian Community has also seen a decrease in production, while Murcia has increased its overall production by 6%.
