Chilean grape production in the 2022/23 season would fall -7.1% year-on-year, reaching 732,000 tons, says the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The decrease in production is due to the reduction in the area planted with this fruit, so since the 2011/12 season the cultivated area decreased from 53,851 to 43,104 hectares in the last season.
The area planted with grapes in the 2022/23 season is projected to decrease -1.4% compared to the 2021/22 season, reaching 42,500 hectares.
New varieties such as Arra-15, Allison, Timco and Sweet Celebration are increasing their acreage, while traditional varieties are shrinking.
To sum up, the downward trend in production is due to drought and the emergence of more profitable crops.
