Genetically modified tomatoes act as a drug against heart disease.
Scientists at the American University UCLA have developed genetically modified tomatoes that act as a drug. These tomatoes contain a molecule that mimics the action of HDL (good cholesterol). Data in mice show that these tomatoes fight obstruction of blood vessels, helping to reduce
heart disease.
For scientists this the first drug with such properties available in an edible plant. The complete results of the work were presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions in Los Angeles.
