The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) in Ecuador, through the Agrocalidad regulatory agency, has successfully completed the procedures to begin exporting fresh pitahaya to China.
Chinese customs authorities have praised the quality of Ecuador's quarantine management systems and the traceability processes at farms and packing centers in the country. To meet the international market's parameters, Agrocalidad inspects shipments to guarantee the fruit's phytosanitary quality.
In order to export pitahaya to China, suppliers must comply with a series of protocols established in cooperation between the two countries. After complying with the planned audit, the opening of the market for this fruit to China is a testament to the commitment of the pitahaya producers and exporters, along with the efforts of the two phytosanitary institutions.
58 destinations worldwide are now open for Ecuadorian pitahaya, with the United States being the primary market, accounting for 84% of the total exported volume, followed by Canada, Colombia, and Singapore.
The pitahaya production in Ecuador spans over 7,216.73 hectares. The provinces with the highest production of this fruit are Morona Santiago, Manabí, Pichincha, and Guayas.
