The 1st white asparagus have arrived

Surprisingly advance for white asparagus in the province of Padua (Padova).

The 1st white asparagus arrived in the province of Padua (Padova). In advance, because of the temperature of this February, relatively moderate compared with the seasonal average. The 1st white asparagus comes from greenhouses. The volume of requests exceeds the supply but the tonnage will increase.

Greenhouse production could reach the same volumes as last year or slightly exceed, because there was no extensions of surfaces. On the contrary, the open air production risk to be disrupted by bad weather and rain which are not conducive to the normal growth of plants.

The Veneto region has 1,400 hectares (62,000 quintals of asparagus harvested in 2012) located in the second position behind the Apulia (Puglia). The province of Padua (Padova) produces about 16,000 quintals of asparagus, quantity of the province of Verona (Verona) 14000 quintals.
