Increase in the areas of GMOs

2012 was a record year for the increase in the areas of GMOs in the world.
ISAA (International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications) presented its annual study of GMO crops worldwide. In 2012, 170.3 million hectares were planted with GMO crops, an increase of 10.3 million hectares compared to 2011.
More than half of the surfaces (52%) are located in the developing countries. Brazil (36.6 million hectares) is the number 2 in the world after the United States (69.5 million) and represents 21% of the world total. India has 10.8 million hectares, 4,000,000 China, Argentina and South Africa 78.2 million hectares.
The African continent registers an increase of 26% to 2.9 million hectares. After South Africa, Egypt and Burkina Faso, Sudan started the first plantings of GMOs.
