The export target has been lowered to around 250,000 tonnes of kinnows while the country exported 460,000 tonnes in the 2020-21 season (Photo: tribune.com.pk).
Due to the shortage of water for irrigation and unexpectedly high temperatures during flowering, kinnow production is declining and will lead to a decrease in exports.
In Pakistan, a decline of 35 to 50% in volume is expected in certain kinnow production areas. The main reasons are the shortage of water for irrigation in a few regions and the unexpectedly high temperatures during flowering.
For this season, the export target has been lowered to around 250,000 tonnes (460,000 tonnes exported in the 2020-21 season).
In Pakistan the average harvest of kinnows reaches 2.4 million tons, citrus fruits contribute about 30% to the country's total fruit production.
Kinnow is a variety of mandarin widely grown in the Punjab region (Pakistan and India). Kinnow is a hybrid of 2 cultivars: King (Citrus nobilis) and Willow Leaf (Citrus deliciosa).
