The demand for organic pineapple is an opportunity

The growing demand for organic pineapple can become an excellent opportunity.

The consumption of pineapples increases in the United States and leads to a growing demand for Peruvian organic pineapples. According to OCEX (Oficina de Promoción Económica of Perú) this production must be encouraged and considered an excellent opportunity to increase export values.

The pineapple could take the same path as the banana which allowed Peru to become the first exporter of organic bananas in less than a decade. Thanks to the combined efforts of thousands of small producers.

Organic pineapple remains a niche market in the United States but its demand is constantly growing. Last year U.S. imports of pineapples amounted to 513 million $. In 2011 the pineapple market in the United States reached a total of 685,000 tons, in 2016 it should reach 704,000 tons.
