In the United States, President Trump has threatened to close the border or large parts of the border with Mexico. This closure of the border would have many other implications than immigration issues. With serious disturbances concerning imported fresh products including avocados, cucumbers and tomatoes.
This closure of the US-Mexico border, in attempting to resolve immigration issues, would also have the effect of causing shortages and raising prices for Fruits & Vegetables in the US.
Indeed, according to Peterson Institute and USDA shipments from Mexico account for nearly half of the imported vegetables and 40% of the imported fruits.
According to the US media, closing the border would threaten exports of avocados, cucumbers and tomatoes, which the United States receives large volumes from Mexico. Reuters quoted Steve Barnard, chief executive and president of Mission Produce, a producer and distributor of lawyers, as predicting a shortage of avocados within 3 weeks of the border closure.
