Russia, the largest importer of fruit worldwide
Russia is the EU’s third most important trading partner behind China and the USA.
This country has a large population with considerable purchasing power. Indeed, the value of Russia’s agricultural and food product imports tripled between 1998 and 2008. Russia is the largest importer of fruit worldwide, importing 80% of all the fruit and vegetables consumed by its population.
The Russian market has shown remarkable development in recent years and it offers many opportunities for EU melon growers.
EU melon exports to Russia totalled 3,656 tons in 2008 and the main exporting countries were The Netherlands (2,322 tons) and Lithuania (1,013 tons).
In terms of volume, EU melon exports to Russia increased 42.42% in 2008 compared with the previous year. In terms of value melons accounted for EUR 3,638,000, increasing 30.86% in comparison with 2007.
