The red bayberry, new exotic fruit being grown in Queensland
Scientists have produced a new exotic fruit in Queensland, previously only grown in China.
The red bayberry is being grown by University of Queensland scientists at a research station on the Sunshine Coast.
Professor Daryl Joyce says the trees are thriving in the sub-tropical climate and now they're looking at commercial production.
"It's actually quite hard to commercialise a new line, because people aren't familiar with it," he says.
"So wholesalers and retailers are reluctant to put it on the shelves, and, more importantly, it's difficult to find growers who are ready to put in place the time and resources that need to be committed up front."
