Japan warns growers of increased fruit pest pressure

Japan is expecting higher pest pressure in several fruit- and vegetable-growing regions, according to a forecast issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF).

Fruit-feeding stink bugs are forecast to be more numerous than usual in parts of northern Kanto, Hokuriku, Tokai, Kansai, Chugoku, Shikoku and Kyushu. These insects can damage fruit by feeding on it, reducing its quality and commercial value.

MAFF also expects increased numbers of cotton bollworm and beet armyworm in parts of Tokai, Kansai and several other regions. Both pests can affect a wide range of vegetable crops.

The ministry advised growers to follow regional pest forecasts, monitor crops closely and apply control measures at the appropriate time.
