Rains and heat may cut Piura mango output by up to 30,000 tonnes

The region is Peru’s top producer and exporter of mangoes.
Mango production in Peru’s Piura region could drop by 20,000 to 30,000 tonnes this season due to heavy rains and rising temperatures, according to the regional agriculture authority.
The Dirección Regional de Agricultura de Piura (DRA Piura) said recent weather conditions have already affected about 335 hectares of crops, based on monitoring carried out by the region’s eight agricultural agencies.
The most affected areas include Bigote, Ayabaca, Huarmaca, Morropón and Huancabamba, where technical teams are continuing to assess damage in the fields.
Authorities said they are increasing crop monitoring, deploying machinery in critical areas and providing technical support to farmers in an effort to limit further losses.
The potential decline is significant because Piura exports around 280,000 tonnes of mango per season, making it Peru’s main producing and exporting region for the fruit.
