Export diversification is becoming central to the country’s fresh produce strategy.

South Korea will expand support for domestically developed varieties of grapes, strawberries, pears and paprika to broaden export markets and strengthen competitiveness in premium segments, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA).

Varieties

The programme focuses on increasing the supply and adoption of Korean-developed varieties selected for climate resilience and overseas consumer preferences. Authorities aim to widen the range of export products, extend shipping periods and reduce dependence on foreign-bred varieties that carry royalty costs.

Target crops include grapes, strawberries, pears and paprika, which are considered key fresh export items. The initiative also seeks to facilitate entry into new markets and stabilise export supply through coordinated support to growers and exporters.

Exports

Exports of the targeted new varieties reached US$3.58 million, equivalent to 590 tonnes, in 2025. For 2026, MAFRA aims to increase shipments by at least 10% compared with the previous year.

Strawberries remain a major export product, with total shipments valued at US$72 million in 2025, while grapes continue to dominate fresh fruit exports. The ministry plans to promote additional red grape varieties to extend the export season and expand sales to markets including the United States, Canada and Russia.

Measures

Support will include production manuals, training for export-oriented farmers, and assistance with seedlings, agricultural inputs and product commercialisation. Authorities will also help producers conclude supply agreements to maintain stable export growth and strengthen long-term research on new varieties.
